Background and aim: Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease with multiple complications. Skin tag is a pedunculated papule, which is more common in women and has been suggested as a cutaneous marker of diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of diabetes mellitus in patients with skin tags.Materials and methods: This descriptive study was done on 100 patients with skin tags. The investigation included fasting blood sugar (FBS) and glucose tolerance test (OTT).Results: 66 patients had normal FBS, 27 had diabetes mellitus, 5 had impaired OTT and 2 had impaired fasting glucose. Over all, 34 had abnormal glucose metabolism, 7 were unaware of their metabolic abnormality. Among 40 hospitalized patients 50% had abnormal glucose metabolism meanwhile 23.3% of 60 outpatients had this abnormality (p<0.01). No association was seen between BMI, obesity, gender, location and number of skin tags with abnormal metabolism of glucose. Conclusion: It is recommended to consider skin tags as a cetaceous marker for abnormality of glucose metabolism.

Background and aim: Non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC) are one of the most prevalent malignancies of the human. Although the morality rate is not high for these cancers, they may cause high morbility for the patients. In addition to the skin type, factors such as sun exposure, head and neck radiotherapy, inappropriate use of sunscreen and cultural changes may increase the incidence of these cancers. The objective of this study was to determine NMSC in Isfahan.Materials and Methods: We used data of the cancer resistery center for performing this study and the incidence of NMSC per 100,000 populations was determined. Results: Overall 1681 cases were registered. The incidence of NMSC was calculated to be 10.67/100,000population. The most common site for BCC and SCC was middle face. Conclusion: NMSC incidence in Isfahan is lower than west countries although this incidence is 10.67/100,000in a year. It means that 5-6 thousand cases of NMSC occur in Iran each year. We can prevent its morbidity and mortality by early correct diagnosis.

Abstract:

In this paper, an alternative approach in operational modal analysis is presented, utilizing image processing technique and transmissibility functions. Imaging sensors do not impose additional mass on the structure due to their non-contact nature, while transmissibility functions, independent of excitation type, can directly extract mode shapes. The innovation of this research lies in combining these two techniques to record dynamic responses and identify modal properties. To capture the temporal response history from video signals, the block-matching method with sub-pixel accuracy was employed. Validation was conducted by recording the response of the tip of a cantilevered steel beam subjected to impact excitation, using a high-speed camera and a laser vibrometer, simultaneously. The RMSE plots in the time domain and the PSD in the frequency domain indicate high accuracy of this method. Using this approach, the displacement time histories of various points on the structure were extracted from the video signals, and the modal properties, including natural frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes, were identified using the transmissibility matrix method. The results obtained from the proposed method were compared with the stochastic subspace identification (SSI) method and analytical solutions. The findings reveal the accuracy of the modal identification approach introduced in this article. The highest relative error in estimating the natural frequencies of the first and second modes, compared to the values from the laser method, are 0.19% and 0.13%, respectively, and in comparison to the analytical values, they are 0.34% and 1.5%, respectively.

Abstract:

In traditional speech processing, feature extraction and classification were conducted as separate steps. The advent of deep neural networks has enabled methods that simultaneously model the relationship between acoustic and phonetic characteristics of speech while classifying it directly from the raw waveform. The first convolutional layer in these networks acts as a filter bank. To enhance interpretability and reduce the number of parameters, researchers have explored the use of parametric filters, with the SincNet architecture being a notable advancement. In SincNet's initial convolutional layer, rectangular bandpass filters are learned instead of fully trainable filters. This approach allows for modeling with fewer parameters, thereby improving the network's convergence speed and accuracy. Analyzing the learned filter bank also provides valuable insights into the model's performance. The reduction in parameters, along with increased accuracy and interpretability, has led to the adoption of various parametric filters and deep architectures across diverse speech processing applications. This paper introduces different types of parametric filters and discusses their integration into various deep architectures. Additionally, it examines the specific applications in speech processing where these filters have proven effective.

Abstract:

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Skin aging is divided into two categories of intrinsic and extrinsic aging. Skin aging due to repeated exposure to ultraviolet radiation (extrinsic aging) is different from aging caused by time (intrinsic aging). The appearance of wrinkles caused by sunlight is due to subcutaneous fat atrophy and reduced production of collagen and elastin, thereby altering the biomechanical properties of the skin tissue. This study was conducted to investigate the skin damage caused by ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation by consecutive ultrasonic image processing with high resolution. METHODS: In this experimental study, we evaluated the skin injury process among 25 C57BL/6 mice in healthy group (zero dose), and case group exposed to UVB radiation at 0. 03 milliwatts per square centimeter (5 times a week for 5 weeks) due to differences in skin characteristics. Physical parameters of dermal and epidermal layers were measured and evaluated weekly from day 7 to day 35 using ultrasonic image processing. FINDINGS: The thickness of the dermal and epidermal layers obtained by ultrasonic processing during the process of ultraviolet radiation injury in the mouse model significantly increased during the 5 – week study (p < 0. 05). In addition, the percentage of changes in the thickness of the epidermis layer (from 0. 22 ± 0. 01 mm on day zero to 0. 37 ± 0. 02 mm on the thirty-fifth day) and the dermal layer (from 0. 57 ± 0. 05 on day zero to 0. 90 ± 0. 08 mm on the thirty-fifth day) showed 68% and 57% increase, respectively. CONCLUSION: The results showed that UVB radiation increased the thickness of the skin layers.

Background & Aims: Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common types of chronic disease leading to serious complications such as blindness, end stage renal disease (ESRD), neuropathy and cardiac disorders. Skin tag is a common benign skin tumor that its association with impaired carbohydrate metabolism has been reported in some studies. The aim of this study was to compare the frequency of diabetes and other carbohydrate metabolism disorders in patients with and without skin tag. Methods: In a case- control study on 200 individuals over 30 years old referring to Dermatology Clinic of Afzalipour Hospital, 100 individuals with at least 3 skin tags as case group and 100 individuals without skin tag as control group underwent FBS and standard GTT tests. Results: There was no significant difference between case and control groups in the frequency of diabetes (19% vs. 10%), IGTT (11%vs.13%) and IFG (19% vs. 15%).Mean FBS and GTT were significantly higher in the case group compared to the control group. There was a positive correlation between the total number of skin tags and mean FBS (r= 0.33, P= 0.001) and GTT (r= 0.37, P= 0.000). The frequency of diabetes in patients with at least 20 skin tags was 45.8%. Positive predictive value, negative predictive value, sensitivity and specificity of skin tag for the diagnosis of diabetes were 19%, 90%, 52% and 65% respectively. Conclusion: This study revealed that patients with skin tags are at a higher risk of carbohydrate metabolism disorders. Therefore, screening of patients with skin tag for carbohydrate metabolism disorders is recommended.

Abstract:

Background and aim: Conventional methods for evaluation of skin aging are based mainly on physiological or biochemical observations. The aim of this study is to provide a non-invasive method based on the extraction of biomechanical parameters of the skin resulting from the processing of sequential high-frequency ultrasound images in order to investigate the process of formation of skin lesions. Materials and Methods: In order to evaluate the process of skin damage, 25 C57BL6 mice were exposed to UVB radiation. The mechanical parameters of the skin derived from the processing of sequential ultrasound images were also estimated weekly by the motion estimation algorithm (gradient and block matching) during the injury process and mean ±,standard deviation was used to report the results. Repeated measures analysis of variance was used to compare the elastic parameters in the trend of changes over 5 weeks. Results: Significant correlation was obtained between elasticity extracted from non-invasive ultrasonic image processing method and invasive tensiometric method with a correlation coefficient of more than 0. 79. By analysis of the sequential ultrasound images, the results showed that the axial elastic and the shear modulus of the skin layers were significantly increased, which indicated the increased skin firmness (p <0. 05). Conclusion: According to the findings of the present study we recommend a non-invasive method for extraction of local biomechanical parameters of skin based on the processing of sequential high-frequency ultrasound images for following the skin damage caused by ultraviolet radiation.
